It would have had more impact if explained more outright rather than having to dig for explanations in the appendix or online. Many mediocre sequels followed, but this first is a great piece of political sci-fi.

George Guidall is terrific throughout, and I find his renderings of Atreides retainers Gurney Halleck and Thufir Hawat in particular to be as close to perfection as anything I’ve ever listened to.
There is an excellent multi-reader version of “Dune” Consider them retracted, and thank you for sharing! Years later, I reviewed an unabridged recording of Dune for SFFaudio that was read by George Guidall. :).
And if that weren’t enough, Davina Porter’s cut-crystal delivery of Princess Irulan’s pseudo-historiographic chapter prefaces is just as sublime: By the time the character eventually makes her first actual appearance within the plot, she has already come entirely alive in one’s mind, merely by virtue of having listened to “her” talk about other people every once in a while. Revisiting the book was a treat and Guidall is the Yoda of audiobook narration, so win-win. It's well written not like books from other scifi authors of the same generation, which had a heavy nearly amateurish style. Which is not to say you don’t have a point - when have “shredders” ever been concerned with rationality, after all? Now, years after that, I’ve heard yet another unabridged version of Dune… Harsh though the environment of Dune may be, it is the only planet in the Empire which can produce melange, the spice drug, which extends the life of those who use it.

Of course, this is all highly subjective and my preference may well be heavily influenced by this being the version I happened to listen to originally…, … that’s how it seems to work with those who prefer the Fry and those who prefer Dale for “Harry Potter”, from what I’ve seen.
