After the railroad arrived, the city expanded nearby deep shaft gold mines into a combined 12 miles of tunnels. WELL THEY DID!!!! In the late 40’s, it was determined that the second floor was unsafe for dances so from then on, dances were held downstairs. The town also provides a historic Narrow Gauge Railroad, where tourists can experience the early 1900s by taking a steam engine tour of the area. A few of Sumpter’s surviving structures remain and are now occupied by retail shops for tourists.
