I have read all her books, have shared them, read them again, and again..... this I think was her first book (or first made into a movie), it's been years and decided to read again and couldn't find, so ordered and loved it so much, I got one for my daughter also (I'm keeping this copy for me).

This was a beautifully written book with even richer character development. Amy Tan uses vignettes of different mothers and daughters going back and forth in time to tell their stories. It contains so much information on Chinese culture post WW2 and how our context impacts on not only our own lives but our children's lives, especially how behaviours and habits in our relationships can be intergenerational. It was the only unabridged version of this book I could find.

In Brooklyn's unforgiving urban jungle, Maggie Moore is torn between answering her own needs and catering to the desirous men who dominate her life. For example, I spent the entire book waiting for Jing-Mei's resolution with her sisters, but did not care much for Rose Hsu's storyline.

But years later, she learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors.

An example: lapel rhymed with label. certainly did not live up to expectations.

If you're looking for a plot, don't bother.
