Luckily, the festival runs over seven days so you have plenty of time to enjoy it. Ardbeg’s traditional pagoda roofs, known as Doig Ventilators, are a hallmark of distillery design, but they are nothing more than a relic from a bygone era when distilleries did all malting on site. The Islay Festival attracts the world’s most passionate whisky fans and each year we release an exceptional whisky just for the event. Getting to Islay is not without its challenges. When I first visited here in 2013, I was mostly concerned with the full-bodied expressions of the Highlands. It was palpably younger, with more women attending classes as well.

Departing daily out of Port Askaig, it’ll take me perilously close to the world’s third-largest whirlpool. After returning to the bustling city of Port Ellen (population 810), I’ll refuel with a freshly toasted haggis sandwich amid the balmy embrace of the Ardview Inn. The festival was founded by locals in 1986 to celebrate the culture and heritage of this magical island. It’s all well worth the £130 ($159) price of admission.
But I’ll go find my peace again along the open trail. Home to fewer than 3,500 residents (spread over 240 square miles), Islay receives nearly twice that many visitors during its annual Feis Ile celebration, held during the last week of May. Every year they have a diverse programme featuring traditional music, ceilidhs, Gaelic lessons, golf, bowling and, most importantly, well for us at least, whisky tasting. My first time observing the process up close was during a half-day tour at the Bowmore Distillery. Last time, after visiting Kilchoman Distillery along the west coast, I made time for Machir Bay. There are currently nine on offer. However, a more positive trend emerged with this year’s Fèis crowd.

The neat taste was simply huge – smoke, ash and burnt sticks; Moffat toffees, Liquorice Allsorts, balsamic pears and Amontillado sherry. Ardnahoe also featured a small but healthy selection of rums, introducing the opportunity to enjoy a different kind of aged spirit on Islay.
Since 1993, they’ve designed and crafted a bespoke quilt that’s auctioned every August. Ardbeg meanwhile served a popular whisky-based fruit punch as part of its carnival-themed open day, which featured music by a steel drum band. A large line also made its way around Bruichladdich on the Monday of the festival as a new Valinch release was rapidly swept up by eager fans.

Indeed, enjoying great whisky in a beautiful corner of the world, surrounded by old friends and new, forms the core of Islay’s popular Festival of Music and Malt, celebrating the whisky produced by its 10 (including Jura) distilleries over a nine-day period. I sat silently and collected my thoughts.
