To be honest, I couldn’t bring forth the Jim Beam Black enough to make a determination.

I'm going to chime in here and say that I was very enthusiastic when I bought it about a year ago, and ended up hating it.

If you are going the neat route then I would at least say bring it down a notch with some ice. Went today and picked up some 1.75L bt and a couple Blanton's! It's usually my go-to stuff. Yep, it's "Buffalo Knob," or some other sort of hybrid not-quite-anything-else from the Beam family. It's a Jim Beam product. I did a side-by-side comparison with the Basil Hayden but the two bourbons were sufficiently different that I didn’t think the Kirkland bourbon was BH (BH had the nuanced flavor and bite I associate with good to great bourbons). It was okay, but definitely not worth the increase in price over the v1. Their Kirkland Vodka is nothing but Grey Goose. Their Kirkland Vodka is nothing but Grey Goose.

It's not the greatest whiskey in the world, it's 100 proof and has a bit of a bite because of it, but for $20 its as good as any of the other guys in that range. Kirkland (Costco’s brand name) has been offering up some substantial values in quality single-malt scotch over the last few years.

Their prices are great and the selection is definitely a cut above.

Note two things: 1) Costco sells both a "Tennessee Whiskey" at 80 proof with a black label that I assumed was to convince customers that it is a JD clone; 2) they are recently selling a "Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey" at 7YO and 103 proof that seems to have replaced the Kirkland Kentucky Straight Bourbon--except it costs $10 more per liter. Kitchn calls it "the hands-down favorite of all Kirkland spirits."

I decided that their track record warranted trying out the American whisky side of the aisle, so I plopped down my $20 for a liter of “Premium Small Batch” Kentucky Straight Bourbon at 7 years of age and an impressive 103 proof. On the palate, the bourbon is fiery (from the alcohol) with sweet notes of corn, oak, cloves, allspice, burnt sugar on the back palate and a hint of caramel.

Looking at the bottle, it’s 51.5% which is relatively high for a bourbon – so the burn is not surprising, but I’d expect the flavor to match. This site is intended for those of legal drinking age.

The Costco I go to in SC has great scotch prices. My Costco also has Kirkland Bourbon and Kirkland Beer is brewed here in San Jose, CA by Gordon Biersch or ( Hopfen Und Malz) for the West Coast anyways. Thanks!

Blantons for 55$, eagle rare 25$, handle of bt 34$. It is made by Jim Beam, which I've never particularly enjoyed, but they make some higher end stuff too and it put this closer to the Knob Creek end in flavor. Booze at Costco is super cheap.

The other flavor that came through on the nose was the alcohol, which you received a powerful whiff of when smelling the bourbon. Now I just wish I had a Costco liquor store in my province. So this week we’re doing an in-depth review of one of the lower-priced bourbons out there to see if it really is comparable to the branded stuff. But, these reviewers had dug in further and found that the bourbon was a Jim Beam product (confirmed by the TTAB website and supposedly, a Costco representative). I'm hoping someone knows who the distiller is so that I can start buying it.
