Callaloo, the premier journal of literature, art, and culture of the African Diaspora, publishes original work by and about writers and visual artists of African descent worldwide. Upcoming Special Issue Peripheral Literatures and the History of Capitalism Guest Editors: Ericka Beckman, Oded Nir, and Emilio Sauri Deadline for Submissions: 1 November 2020 This special issue asks how peripheral literatures understand on a global scale the history of capitalism from the late nineteenth century to the present. For those interested in the more creative aspects of the journal, poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and art are accepted and published in every issue of the journal.

The workshops were originally created as an outreach programme to historically black colleges and universities in the USA, but these workshops have now expanded to serve new and emerging poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers throughout English-speaking regions of the African Diaspora.

Project Description: Since the last decades of the twentieth century, writers across the African Diaspora have drawn on elements of the narrative structure and thematic configuration of slave narratives in their recovery of the genre. Book reviews (of which there are options for poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and academic texts) are short pieces that are less about glowing applause for or absolute crushing of a particular text and more about thinking through the parameters of the text (and the author’s work) and critically addressing what is absent/missing/not studied in-depth enough. Compellingly, as Lars Eckstein writes, “while most colonial testimonies of slavery have long disappeared from the working memory of today’s Black Atlantic societies, the prejudices and stereotypes they conveyed [unfortunately] have not” [see reference in the link below].
