I'd heard some of his song without knowing it was him singing them. Pretty much all the Sam Cooke most people need (and people DO need some Sam Cooke), this attractive package draws from Cooke's Specialty, Keen and RCA Victor recordings, all 30 of them hits or especially significant. A must have for music lovers, especially those like myself who are of a certain age, and remember what great music sounded like. Wonderful melodies.

I have four SACD players... two Sony BluRay players (who as the inventor of SACD, you'd have thought their drives would play the SACD layer if it existed on this disc), a Pioneer BluRay player and a Denon DVD player, all of which have no problem whatsoever playing other SACD discs I own and clearly list the fact in their displays (and secondly confirmed by my DSD compatible AV Amplifier which confirms it is receiving and processing a DSD stream) but this Sam Cooke disc absolutely refuses to play anything but a standard PCM/CD Audio encoding. My wife loves her CD so we bought this one for a friend. He was only 33 years old. Nevertheless, the curious and the novice should be aware that this is not a good introduction to Sam Cooke, because it doesn't provide a full portrait of his career and it overlooks too many necessary songs.
I've heard others of his songs sung by other soul and reggae artists without being aware that they were Sam Cooke's songs. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This is a must have CD for those who love Sam Cooke. The smooth richness of his vocals recorded at a time when there was no remixing, redubbing, just the quality and pureness of that golden voice. There are my personal favourites on this album - A Change is Gonna Come, Twistin' the Night Away, Cupid, Bring it on Home to me, and many more favourites that get you clicking your fingers and tap tapping your feet along to the beats.
